How did you get started in the Trucking Industry?

My father owned a large road construction company which is where I learned to operate heavy equipment, including driving class 8 trucks. I sharpened my skills by moving equipment and hauling asphalt tankers. My first truck was a 1979 Needle nose Diamond Reo Dump truck that I got to pick up from the plant in Harrisburg, PA for my 18th birthday.

What about MATS is most valuable to you?

New products and networking. Nothing beats a face to face connection, and being able to experience products in person.

All the amazing people and customers I have met in 40 years at MATS. It is a gathering place where you can catch up on business, technology, facts, education and amazing trucks, and friendships. I always leave MATS with so much more than I came with.

What advice do you have for other trucking professionals?

Always Be patient and kind. Persistent and willing to learn. Give but never expect to receive. Listen to learn, and learn to pay it forward!!!

It's true that Education is knowledge and in trucking Knowledge and Experience is SAFETY!

Trucking is so much more than a job! Even though it's hard work at times, never give up.

What are the reasons you would recommend MATS?

MATS is the hub for all areas in the trucking Industry. It offers every single thing needed and the hands on information you need to answer any questions. Whether it be about equipment, technology, safety, careers, becoming a new driver, independent contractor, broker, recruiter, mechanic, or starting a fleet. MATS is the largest information and education portal to help trucking professionals operate successfully in the industry.

The on-site seminars offer training and knowledge in all these areas, and so much more. Then of course you have the awesome show trucks, with so many that I can't pick just one these days! All the vendors represent the best of the best, and function as additional information sources. There's something for every age, gender, level of knowledge and area in the industry. Then there's the friendships and camaraderie. Many in my life are friendships I've made at MATS, and we still meet each year in Louisville 17-20 years later. Then the new friendships we know we will make because that's just MATS!!! If you come to your first one, you'll be back for many more.

What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of in your career in trucking?

Every single one that God and this industry has believed in me to share. I have driven over 4 million safe miles in 40 years. It’s an honor to still be here today and have my life flourishing in so many more ways. More than I could have ever dreamed.
